Danish Energy Agency transitions to new energy solution from KMD

KMD now powers more flexible calculations of green subsidies at the Danish Energy Agency through the IT solution KMD Elements which has been put into operation. The agreement runs for six years, and the IT solution is expected to be a cornerstone in ensuring efficient and correct disbursement of subsidies to produce renewable energy.

25,500 billings and almost DKK 803 million paid in green subsidies for November and December 2021. The figures here are from the first runs that the KMD solution implemented for the Danish Energy Agency. Those are significant sums that the Danish Energy Agency's new IT solution must be able to handle.

Overall, the transition has gone well, according to both the supplier KMD and the customer, the Danish Energy Agency.

"Over the years, we have witnessed lots of implementations of new IT systems that did not proceed as intended – with major consequences. The transition to Elements has been very successful with no major errors or unexpected problems. The project has been longer than expected, but thanks to a very extensive testing work and a constructive cooperation with KMD, we have experienced a smooth introduction for the agency's employees and most importantly for our users," says Jesper Falck Hansen, Head of IT at the Danish Energy Agency.

The new IT solution handles business processes through a solid data register for all renewable energy-producing power plants in Denmark, and by supporting calculation as well as payment of green subsidies based on quantities produced and changing support schemes. This critical task for society is carried out with a high focus on correct, efficient and timely calculation and process management in compliance with the authorities’ responsibility.

"KMD and the Danish Energy Agency have had a long-standing strong collaboration on IT solutions, and we are proud to have completed a robust transition to KMD Elements. We have done our part to future-proof the solution for energy billing so that it supports the green transition today as well as in the future," says Merete Søby, Director of Data Driven Solutions at KMD.

About the solution

KMD Elements is a cloud-based software solution, built on modules that enable and facilitate the work on complex billings based on time series. Based on Microsoft Azure technology, the system is designed to handle the increasing complexity of the energy market with decentralized energy production, volatile renewable energy production and increased electricity consumption. KMD Elements is conceived and developed for the international market from the very beginning. The system is one of the first of its kind in the world to operate across borders, time zones, languages and currencies.

The transition to KMD Elements has taken place over a longer implementation period to ensure a smooth and efficient transition.
