KMD will support the increased use of green energy with flexibility in the power grid through a partnership agreement with NODES

With a recently signed partnership agreement, KMD and NODES in Norway will make a technological platform available in Denmark which will allow large energy consumers to contribute to an improved balancing of the grid. The platform will also give the consumers more incentives to use power at times when there is a surplus of green power in the grid.

Denmark is committed to reducing CO2 emissions by 70% before 2030 compared to the level of emissions in 1990. In order to achieve this goal, there is a need to succeed in doing several things. One of the most important initiatives is to increase the share of sustainable energy by, for example, expanding the capacity of offshore wind farms.

However, the production of sustainable energy depends on the weather regardless of whether it is wind or solar energy. Today, flexibility is used on the supply side to match the demand so there is sufficient power to cover this demand. After all, it is not possible to make the sun shine on a cloudy day or to make the westerly winds blow stronger.

In line with the technology providing the possibility to take more control over when and how we use our energy, increased access to data can give the consumers the opportunity to make well-informed decisions. This can contribute to reducing the impact sustainable energy has on the stability of the power grid.

“NODES is involved in several projects in the Nordic region and Central Europe where we develop marketplaces that make it possible for those who have access to flexibility to be financially rewarded by offering this flexibility to the grid operator in the local area. In this way, we can contribute to maintaining grid stability and postpone the investments that are required to strengthen or expand the grid. Our experience shows that this is an important aspect to pay attention to when it comes to Denmark being able to meet its emission reduction targets,” says Richard Sarti, Marketing and Sales Director from NODES.

For example, when a large number of households in Denmark start their dishwashers, plug in the electric car for charging and switch on the tumble dryer at the same time every evening, the power grid is exposed to a great amount of stress. If the stress becomes too great because everyone is suddenly switching on their electrical equipment at the same time, the grid can become congested. So it makes good sense to harvest flexibility on the consumer side of things and the solution can compensate people financially when they help to reduce the peak load.

“For Denmark to be able to fulfil its climate goals, there is a need for investments in a new infrastructure. But it is just as important to investigate the unutilized potential connected to adapting consumption patterns to improve the balancing of the grid based on realtime data. Our platform will be a step in the right direction to use unutilized flexibility and increase the share of sustainable energy in the grid,” says Benjamin Nørby, Head of Industry Sales at Industry Sales in KMD.

Merete Søby, Executive Vice President, Data Driven Solutions and senior head of the commercial market in KMD, adds:
“In the new partnership, we are pushing the transition to sustainable energy. The goal is to introduce a tool, which through data-driven information in realtime, impacts consumer behaviour quite directly. This strengthens KMD’s already strong presence on the energy and utility market.”

The just signed partnership agreement between KMD and the Norwegian company, NODES, is aimed at accumulating the flexibility over a 24-hour period.

The technological platform is called Demand Flexibility Aggregation, and it will function as a digital marketplace where suppliers and buyers of flexibility can trade. For example, this may be distribution and transmission companies on the buyer side and utility companies, municipalities and large companies on the seller side.

About NODES

NODES is an independent marketplace for a future with sustainable energy in which supply, producers and consumers can trade with decentralized flexibility and energy. As an independent market operator, NODES addresses the important tendencies and challenges in the energy system such as increased share of production of sustainable energy, decentralized production and a rapid change of customer behaviour. NODES’ vision is to create Europe’s most customer-centric and integrated energy marketplace by using the value in local, flexible power sources and, consequently, support the path towards a sustainable future of zero emissions. NODES’ mission is to utilize the flexibility in the grid optimally by offering an open, integrated marketplace for all flexibility providers and utility companies. Read more at www.NODESmarket.com.
