KMD will support the increased use of green energy with flexibility in the power grid through a partnership agreement with NODES

Denmark is committed to reducing CO2 emissions by 70% before 2030 compared to the level of emissions in 1990. In order to achieve this goal, there is a need to succeed in doing several things. One of the most important initiatives is to increase the share of sustainable energy by, for example, expanding the capacity of offshore wind farms.

However, the production of sustainable energy depends on the weather regardless of whether it is wind or solar energy. Today, flexibility is used on the supply side to match the demand so there is sufficient power to cover this demand. After all, it is not possible to make the sun shine on a cloudy day or to make the westerly winds blow stronger.

In line with the technology providing the possibility to take more control over when and how we use our energy, increased access to data can give the consumers the opportunity to make well-informed decisions. This can contribute to reducing the impact sustainable energy has on the stability of the power grid.

“NODES is involved in several projects in the Nordic region and Central Europe where we develop marketplaces that make it possible for those who have access to flexibility to be financially rewarded by offering this flexibility to the grid operator in the local area. In this way, we can contribute to maintaining grid stability and postpone the investments that are required to strengthen or expand the grid. Our experience shows that this is an important aspect to pay attention to when it comes to Denmark being able to meet its emission reduction targets,” says Richard Sarti, Marketing and Sales Director from NODES.

For example, when a large number of households in Denmark start their dishwashers, plug in the electric car for charging and switch on the tumble dryer at the same time every evening, the power grid is exposed to a great amount of stress. If the stress becomes too great because everyone is suddenly switching on their electrical equipment at the same time, the grid can become congested. So it makes good sense to harvest flexibility on the consumer side of things and the solution can compensate people financially when they help to reduce the peak load.

“For Denmark to be able to fulfil its climate goals, there is a need for investments in a new infrastructure. But it is just as important to investigate the unutilized potential connected to adapting consumption patterns to improve the balancing of the grid based on realtime data. Our platform will be a step in the right direction to use unutilized flexibility and increase the share of sustainable energy in the grid,” says Benjamin Nørby, Head of Industry Sales at Industry Sales in KMD.

The just signed partnership agreement between KMD and the Norwegian company, NODES, is aimed at accumulating the flexibility over a 24-hour period.

The technological platform is called Demand Flexibility Aggregation, and it will function as a digital marketplace where suppliers and buyers of flexibility can trade. For example, this may be distribution and transmission companies on the buyer side and utility companies, municipalities and large companies on the seller side.
