How Aarhus Municipality have saved 7.1 million Danish kroner on their energy bill

By using KMD Energy Management Suite, Aarhus Municipality have obtained and handled their consumption data. In that way, Aarhus Municipality have through data driven energy management been able to target their energy efficiency measures and achieved savings of five percent on the energy bill and more than 7.1 million Danish kroner (DKK).

By working with our energy consumption through data-based energy consumption, we have achieved a marked reduction of our energy consumption, and at the same time we have created big internal knowledge about energy consumption in the municipality,

”Data is a crucial tool to support the green transition”

The municipality has obtained energy data directly from the utility companies and put up their own meters and sensors. Data is then organized into KMD Energy Management Suite:

“Data is a crucial tool to support the green transition, and data driven energy demand management can bring both green and economic benefits. In the short term, it can be used to reduce energy consumption across a municipality’s buildings and institutions – but if you get data to live around the organization, it can create real behavioral changes. Aarhus municipality is a shining example of this,” says Merete Søby, Executive Vice President of Data Driven Solutions (DDS) at KMD, and continues:

“A municipality like Aarhus has large amounts of data on the consumption of water, heat and electricity. When you collect the relevant data and start looking at consumption across the municipality and compare from building to building, you get a completely different picture of consumption,” she says.

What is the Energy Management Suite solution – and how does it work?

KMD Energy Management Suite is a software solution that can help you be more data driven in ensuring buildings optimal energy consumption:

“By making automatic data collection for each hour, you can see the amount of energy the building uses overall. KMD Energy Management Suite can gain energy-efficient operation so that the buildings don’t use to much or to less energy. If the buildings use to little energy there is a risk of bad indoor climate. The energy consumption should be on the right level,” says Thomas Kolze, Sales specialist in KMD, who sold the solution to Aarhus municipality, and continues:

“The data helps us identify where there is an unnecessary energy consumption in e.g., public buildings that are closed during the night hours. By making energy efficient operation you can find between 10 percent and 30 percent savings, and Aarhus municipality has at the moment found around 5 percent and will in the future probably be able to find more savings despite the size of the municipality,” he says.

At the moment, 32 municipalities are using the KMD Energy Management Suite solution.
